Seeds of Hope: 25 years of Transforming Lives with WeHOPE

From Humble Beginnings

When WeHOPE began its first outreach as Project WeH.O.P.E in 1999, it was just a group of volunteers made up of Saint Samuel congregation members looking to help anyone experiencing homelessness. For Pastor Paul and Cheryl Bains, founders of WeHOPE, addressing homelessness has been a lifelong mission deeply rooted in their personal values and experiences.

"How we treat the poor matters. You're either part of the solution or part of the problem. When I met Cheryl, our shared vision was to help homeless people. This calling was instilled in me from childhood, watching my father welcome those in need into our home, even when we had little to spare ourselves," said Pastor Bains.

The Bains’ commitment to this cause was further strengthened by the stark reality they faced in their community. "There was no homeless shelter in East Palo Alto, and only two in the entire county. We knew we had to act," Pastor Paul recalls.

From these humble beginnings, WeHOPE's impact has grown exponentially over the past 25 years:

  • Starting with a gym that sheltered 12-20 homeless individuals during colder months.

  • Evolving into a year-round shelter through county recognition and grant support.

  • Expanding services and reaching countless lives over two and a half decades.

This journey of hope and transformation stands as a testament to what can be achieved when compassion meets action, and when a community comes together to support its most vulnerable members.

In "Behind the HOPE,” Pastor Paul and Cheryl Bains reflect on 25 years of hope. This intimate glimpse into their journey reveals the triumphs and challenges that have shaped WeHOPE's profound impact on the community.

Seeds of Hope - Impact Worth Celebrating

As WeHOPE celebrates its 25th anniversary, we invite you to join us for our Seeds of Hope event on October 17. This special gathering is an opportunity to commemorate our journey, celebrate our achievements, and look forward to the future of hope we're cultivating together.

Natalie Walker, director of development, shares her excitement for the upcoming event:

WeHOPE has been a beacon of light in our community for 25 years. The Seeds of Hope event is not just a celebration, but a powerful demonstration of what compassion and dedication can achieve. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound difference WeHOPE’s programs and services make, particularly through our homeless services and the Dignity on Wheels mobile hygiene program. The work we do is comprehensive, innovative, and, most importantly, life-changing for the individuals we serve. This event is a chance for all of us to come together and plant the seeds for another 25 years of hope and transformation.

Join us on October 17th to be part of this momentous occasion. Your presence and support will help us continue sowing seeds of hope for years to come. Support the event and learn more here.
