Juana’s Journey of Resilience After Tragedy

Two years after the tragic Half Moon Bay shooting, we have witnessed Juana Zavala’s remarkable journey of resilience. While working at Mountain Mushroom Farm, she experienced an unimaginable trauma that left her and her three teenage children without a home.

In the aftermath of losing her partner during the shooting and witnessing the devastating events firsthand, Juana found strength through our supportive community. Her story exemplifies the transformative power of determination and hope.

Through collaboration with her dedicated case manager Llesenia Barragan and our community partners, Juana has achieved significant milestones in rebuilding her life. Though she continues to process her trauma and PTSD, her unwavering focus remains on creating a stable future for her children.

Today, we celebrate Juana's achievements. She has secured permanent housing within walking distance of her children's school and has become a valued member of our WeHOPE family, working full-time at Coast House where she helps prepare meals and maintain our facilities. While the memories remain fresh, her faith and gratitude shine through as she continues to care for her family.

To Juana: Your resilience embodies the spirit of hope that drives our mission at WeHOPE. Through your journey, you show others that healing and growth are possible with support and determination. Your strength in moving forward while prioritizing your children's well-being has touched all of our hearts. You remind us that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.

WeHOPE extends our deepest gratitude to Abode and San Mateo County for their partnership in supporting Juana's journey toward stability and healing.
