Stories of Hope: Finding Purpose Through Work with Crystal Ruiz
WeHOPE Stories • When Crystal Ruiz arrived at WeHOPE in December 2023, she was at a crossroads. After 5 1/2 years of homelessness due to a personal crisis, she was ready for change but unsure of the path forward. Little did she know that her journey with WeHOPE would not only provide her with shelter but also reignite her sense of purpose through meaningful work.
"At first, everything felt overwhelming," Crystal recalls. "But WeHOPE offered more than just a roof over my head. They gave me hope and an opportunity to rebuild my life."
The turning point for Crystal came when she joined WeHOPE's Dignity on Wheels (DoW) team. This experience became the catalyst for her transformation. "Working with DoW wasn't just about earning money," she explains. "It was about regaining my dignity and finding a reason to move forward each day."
As Crystal progressed, new opportunities emerged. When WeHOPE expanded to Half Moon Bay, a community close to her heart, she transitioned into a new role with the support of her manager, Anita Blount. Today, Crystal serves as a Resident Services Coordinator at Coast House, a position that allows her to give back to others facing similar challenges.
"My journey with WeHOPE has taught me so much about humility and the power of second chances," Crystal reflects. "Now, I'm not just healthy, housed, and employed. I'm able to help others find their path to stability and hope."
